"Many Viking sagas tell of shield-maidens, or female warriors, fighting alongside men. The most famous and most tragic was Brunnhilde, who was a valkyrie before she defied Odin and was condemned to live as a mortal woman. After being imprisoned in a fire-ringed castle, Brunnhilde was rescued by her true love, who was later bewitched into forgetting her and marrying another. But she had her revenge, and in her final act threw herself on the funeral pyre of her love so that they could be reunited in the underworld.
